First: is anyone in danger?

If a child, a vulnerable person or a pet is locked inside, or something dangerous is happening inside (like a stove left on or a bath running), call 000 first. Emergency services will respond. Call a locksmith after that.

If nobody is at risk, take a breath. Nearly every lockout ends with the door opened undamaged within an hour or so of calling for help.

Check every way in (safely)

• Other doors. Back doors, laundry doors and the internal door from the garage are often left unlocked.
• Windows you can reach from the ground. Only if you can open one without climbing, forcing or breaking it. Never climb onto a roof or ledge.
• The garage. A remote in the car, or a keypad you've forgotten about.
• Anyone with a spare key. A partner, family member, neighbour or friend. It's worth a few phone calls before paying a call-out fee.

Locked out of your house at night

Being locked out at night is more stressful, and a little more expensive, but the same steps apply. Stay somewhere well lit, ideally with a neighbour or in your car. Let someone know where you are.
